Loneliness/Solitude
This project explores what it means to be alone - solitude - and to feel alone - loneliness.
These concepts seemed to be divided only by a fine line, but it was only through many hours of conversation with others that I began to realise the extent to which interpretations varied from person to person. For some, solitude is about connecting with oneself, peace-of-mind, liberation. Others associated confinement, bareness, dullness. Similarly, loneliness meant feeling misunderstood and unloved for some, whilst others saw beauty and not fear. I have attempted a visual abstraction/representation of the gathered perspectives; hopefully, viewers can consider which components/images they themselves may relate with. This work was the final project for the 'Visual Conversations: Photography' joint program between Leiden University and the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK), and was showcased at KABK on 2022.05.20-21. |
